Part One: Thinking through summary:

  • WORKING WITH ONE SOURCE: spend about 10 minutes reviewing the article,
  • WRITE YOUR SUMMARY: spend 5 minutes writing about this summary.


Part Two: Talking through summary in GROUPS!

  • without referring to your summary, explain this source and its significance to your group.
  • GROUP MEMBERS: ask questions! PRESENTERS: take notes!
  • SPEND 5 minutes (or so) revising your summaries based on your discussion



  • SUMMARIZE: paraphrase the main argument, scope of study (AVOID QUOTING!!)
  • ASSESS: determine usefulness, evaluate reliability or objectivity of study, identify goals
  • REFLECT: How does it shape your argument? How does it fit with other sources?
